OUTGOING OXFORD UNITED MEDIC INSPIRES GIRLS AT HER GAME TOO-SUPPORTED EVENT

Oxford United Football Club’s continued support of Her Game Too has recently seen the club’s women’s team become a campaign partner and a special event held for female fans.

In addition to Oxford United Women joining Her Game Too, women and girls were invited to a question-and-answer session with the club’s former head of medical services, aimed at inspiring the next generation of female footballers.

The event, held at the club’s training ground, was hosted by the Oxford United Supporters Panel and the club’s Her Game Too Ambassador, Grace Bailey, to give females involved in the club a chance to hear from an inspirational woman in the game.

Amy Cranston, who worked in the medical team at Oxford United for 12 years before recently leaving to become Manchester United Women’s Head of Women’s Physiotherapy, answered a range of questions from the audience, which included young female players and supporters from the local area.

Topics discussed included Amy’s career in football, the difference in common injuries suffered in women’s and men’s football, her experience of working in a male-dominated environment, at what age girls should stop playing with boys due to physical development and how Amy felt the women’s game had progressed, particularly since Her Game Too evolved three years ago.

Amy worked in a variety of roles in the club’s medical department after joining Oxford United’s youth academy in 2012, before becoming Head of Medical Services at the start of the 2018/19 season.

Grace said: “Events like this are so important to show women and girls that they are welcome at football and that if they ever need support, Her Game Too and the club are there to help.

“It also is always brilliant to bring awareness to this campaign and to show we can make positive changes and do positive events like this one.”

Since partnering with Her Game Too in March 2022, Oxford United have dedicated two fixtures to Her Game Too to raise awareness of the campaign and celebrate women in all roles at the club, and hosted a panel featuring women working in different positions, to showcase the diverse range of jobs available and inspire other females to pursue careers in football.
