HER GAME TOO ANNOUNCE TWO NEW AMBASSADORS FOR CHELTENHAM TOWN

Limara Salt

By Limara Salt Mary Stone and Taz Scoles have joined the Her Game Too Ambassador team representing their beloved Cheltenham Town FC.

Mary has been involved with HGT for nearly two years as an advocate and is delighted to continue building connections with like-minded women. “I wanted to be a part of a movement which I know will positively change football forever,” she says.

“I know HGT is going to do amazing things as a campaign over the coming years, and I can’t wait to be a part of it. I’d just like to see HGT continue to grow and blossom, and make people challenge their own views on women and football.”

Mary was introduced to the beautiful game by her dad and quickly took an interest in the rules and tactics. “A large part of me falling in love with the game was forming a connection with my dad and giving us something to talk about,” she says.

“He took me and my brother to our first game when we were little, and while my brother was more interested in a burger at half time, I was fascinated by what I saw on the pitch.”

Meanwhile Taz became a fan of Cheltenham FC after being taken to a game by her boyfriend and decided during 2020 that she wanted to see more games in person. For her, the connections made with other fans and the emotions experienced during the game are what keep her coming back.

“Imagine you’re in the 95th minute and your team score the winning goal… that’s what made me fall in love with football,” she explains. “Just going through all of the emotions and making close friends who now I see every week in the stands and on the turnstiles are what make the game special.”

While joining a football club at primary school didn’t result in a career on the pitch, Mary continued to attend games and create memories as a fan of Cheltenham Town FC. “One highlight was when we played Halifax in 2016 and secured the title and promotion to League Two,” she says. “I had a French exchange student with me at the time and she had no clue what was going on – I even dragged her onto the pitch!”

Mary has also experienced the downsides of football, with Cheltenham being relegated last season. “We got off to such a bad start, so taking it to the last game should be something to be proud of. Watching Luke Southwood be stretchered off with a broken leg in the 27th minute really tugged at my heart strings.”

Similarly, Taz has relegation cemented in her memory. “The worst moment I have faced was the relegation back to League Two. All of the other results went our way, but it just didn’t happen. We went to Stevenage with hope, but it’s the hope that kills you. Seeing the players heartbroken just made it even more painful.

“But sometimes I think the best moments come from the worst. Having gone 11 games without winning or even scoring to gaining one point away. We won the games we were expected to lose on paper, she explains.”

Mary’s experiences at Whaddon Road are what make her goals as a HGT Ambassador clear. “It can feel like an isolating experience at times; Cheltenham Town have been great since I joined and my views really align with theirs,” she says. “We’ve discussed simple, actionable things like sanitary bins in the women’s toilets, and we’ve got big hopes for our dedicated fixture this season.”

“As simple as it may be, I just want to make more women feel welcome at the football”.

An aim echoed by Taz: “I’ve had moments where online comments made me feel little and that I shouldn’t like this sport.

“Little things such as offensive and misogynistic chants happen more often than you think… When I hear a chant I think what would happen if a little girl hears this and feels too uncomfortable to come back and support the club,” she says.

“I hope to create a community of women who love football. To raise awareness of Her Game Too and get more girls and women involved. I would also like every woman who comes to the club feel safe and enjoy the football experience.”
